![]() ![]() Their account of the benefits that plastics would bring to a person born nearly 70 years ago, at the beginning of this ‘ plastic age’, was told with much optimism: Many of the current applications and the predicted benefits of plastic follow those outlined by Yarsley and Couzens in the 1940s. There is some urgency, as the quantity of plastics produced in the first 10 years of the current century is likely to approach the quantity produced in the entire century that preceded. Such measures will be most effective through the combined actions of the public, industry, scientists and policymakers. There are solutions, including material reduction, design for end-of-life recyclability, increased recycling capacity, development of bio-based feedstocks, strategies to reduce littering, the application of green chemistry life-cycle analyses and revised risk assessment approaches. Given our declining reserves of fossil fuels, and finite capacity for disposal of waste to landfill, this linear use of hydrocarbons, via packaging and other short-lived applications of plastic, is simply not sustainable. Yet over a third of current production is used to make items of packaging, which are then rapidly discarded. Around 4 per cent of world oil production is used as a feedstock to make plastics and a similar amount is used as energy in the process. However, perhaps the most important overriding concern, which is implicit throughout this volume, is that our current usage is not sustainable. However, concerns about usage and disposal are diverse and include accumulation of waste in landfills and in natural habitats, physical problems for wildlife resulting from ingestion or entanglement in plastic, the leaching of chemicals from plastic products and the potential for plastics to transfer chemicals to wildlife and humans. It is evident that plastics bring many societal benefits and offer future technological and medical advances. In this concluding paper to the Theme Issue on Plastics, the Environment and Human Health, we synthesize current understanding of the benefits and concerns surrounding the use of plastics and look to future priorities, challenges and opportunities. Plastics have transformed everyday life usage is increasing and annual production is likely to exceed 300 million tonnes by 2010. ![]()

![]() ![]() So as the island starts to fill up it becomes more advantageous to put a building where trees are, since there are fewer opportunities for you to earn points from them. ![]() Woodcutters, a building you can sometimes get a lot of early on, earn points by being near trees, but only earn those points at the moment they are placed. In Islanders, you often start off on an island trying to avoid destroying nature. This leaves your city looking like a strange organism in a petri dish in search of nutrients as you clear out mountains or anything else in your path. As a round moves along, you have to rapidly expand your city to connect with resources that are further away. Nothing repopulates forests don’t grow back or expand, neither do farms, and grassland tiles do nothing. In 20 Minute Metropolis, when you finish digging up a mountain, harvesting farmland, or cutting down a forest, the tile converts to a blank grassland tile. But the end state of each game leaves the world around these cities devoid of the nature that was there at the start, or in some cases, even blighted. Conversely, Islanders is a slower and more relaxed experience where you can take your time to plan and place your buildings to maximize the synergies between them to improve your score. The puzzle turns into a complex question: how do you maximize your points now so that you have more rounds in the future, while also leaving space for future rounds to maximize point synergies?īoth games are great: 20 Minute Metropolis scratches that SimCity / Cities: Skylines itch of making a city or interconnected system run effectively, but in a condensed and sometimes hectic form. This continues until you either run out of space, don’t earn enough points, or move onto a new island (which unlocks by passing a certain point threshold on your current island). Islanders, on the other hand, has you trying to construct the best settlement you can on a procedurally generated island. So the game’s puzzle is in how to create an efficient city that can constantly produce the resources you need, while also letting you take resources away from it in order to make more parks. Instead, you gain points from making parks. The end goal isn’t about creating the most populous city, though. Put this all together and you have a simple, but intricate interlocking ecosystem. In order to produce that work, apartments need food from farms and landfills where they can send waste. Each location only has a finite amount of resources, and in order to acquire them you need to create “work,” which is produced at apartments. Each building costs resources (stone, wood, metal, or plastic), which you get from logging forests, digging up mountains, or mining ruins. First, 20 Minute Metropolis is like a sped-up version of SimCity, where you try to build the best city you can in 20 minutes. ![]() ![]() ![]() but I remove this ability and re-add it to the caster. And it examines the deadly, technological game between the bomb-makers and the authorities who sought to stop them across the course of some 19,000 bombings. Subtitled "a history of deadly ingenuity," it gives and detailed insight into how the improvised explosive device was developed by the world's most proficient insurgent group. In particular, it describes the bombing campaigns, from the first gunpowder blast at Clerkenwell in London in 1867 to the immense "city destroyers" of the 1990's. Oppenheimer, is a history of the long war fought by Irish insurgent groups it has some vital lessons for the current conflicts. ![]() ![]() ![]() A prominent plot point centers on a complicated and often misunderstood legal rule known as the rule against perpetuities. Ned knows the police will consider the new will suspicious. Despite Ned's previous warning against making any estate changes, Matty forged the new will, exploiting Ned's past malpractice issues, knowing it would be nullified and leaving her the sole beneficiary. The new will was improperly prepared, making it null and void and results in Matty inheriting Edmund's entire fortune, while disinheriting his sister. Soon after, Edmund's lawyer contacts Ned about a new will that Ned supposedly drafted for Edmund and which was witnessed by Mary Ann Simpson. Ned detonates the bomb to appear as if Edmund accidentally died during a botched arson attempt. Ned consults a shady former client, Teddy Lewis (Mickey Rourke), an explosives expert, who provides Ned a small incendiary device, though he advises Ned abandon his plans.Īfter murdering Edmund, Ned and Matty move his body to an abandoned building that Edmund owns. When she wishes Edmund was dead, Ned suggests murdering him so Matty can inherit his wealth. Soon after, Matty tells Ned she wants a divorce, but a prenuptial agreement would leave her almost nothing. The woman is actually Mary Ann Simpson, Matty's old high school friend who physically resembles her and who is briefly in town. Late one night, Ned arrives at the Walker mansion and, seeing Matty in the gazebo, playfully propositions her. Matty's wealthy husband, Edmund, is always away on business during the week.
